@taypar11 I wouldn’t call the message in this episode “underlying.” It’s pretty obvious. I agree with you that law enforcement regularly abuses their authority, though. :/
This episode has an underlying message. That the officers are NOT above the laws they have sworn to uphold. Today, they are doing just that. Today’s lawment try to use intimadation in the place of respect. When I was little, I repected the officers in my hometown because they respected me. Not any more. Fuck the police (state) we’ve become. When I got stopped in the old days, I didn’t worry so much, just took my ticket and left. Today, I worry when I see those red and blue lights.
Don Knotts won 5 Emmys in a row! No one has ever matched that run. When he died, Andy Griffith came on ABC and said he’d lost his brother. They had been on Broadway together in the stage version of NO TIME FOR SARGENTS. They go way back and were great friends up until Knotts died. I talked to Dick York in 1992 before he died and the one thing he regretted was not winning just one Emmy for Bewitched but said if he had to lose year after year, it was nice to lose to a great actor like Don.
Citizen’s arrest citizen’s arrest Hahaha love this episode… and Aunt Bea’s Medicine Man! TOOOOTOOOOTOOTSIE
Jim Nabors said this was his favorite episode and I agree with him. This episode is my number 1 favorite. with the Pickle Story being number 2.
“You just go up an alley and holler fish!”
“If I didn’t think you were kiddin’, I’d hit you with a 912!”
@DutchKalhoun LOL….that’s what makes it funny, it’s the absurdity of it all. It’s not really satire, but some of it I think is meant to kinda poke fun at Yankee LEOs (Barney always trying to be like “the Big Boys” up North)
There will never be another Don Knotts, truly one of the most awesome actors of his time.

Barney is another one of those cops who takes his job waaaaaaaay too seriously. Makes him feel like a big shot to pull somebody over for some bubblegum bullshit offense.
You would think that Andy Griffith would have told them that North Carolina (where this show is based) doesn’t recognize citizen’s arrest.
damn barney has a big mouth!! always talking s*** all the time. then when he is confronted he turns into a little pussy. what a douche
Gomer and Barney together is just too funny!
CITIZENS ARREST!!! CITIZENS ARREST!!!
@schs1977
Roseanne was on the air for 9 seasons!!!! I do believe the last season was NOT needed.. i hated the Connors with money, but it was funny , I would say for a good 7 seasons.. thats still pretty good
@99Mary99 – Thank Goodness Rosanne was cancelled. It was funny when it started, then it became worthless
@schs1977
Roseanne is def. NOT crap, that show was as REAL as you can get; that being said the ANDY GRIFFITH show is timeless and original.
But Roseanne was original– two overweight working class individuals trying to raise a family is a show that has yet to be re-created by another.. that show was GUTSY — NOT crap at all.. thats my opinion and i have to defend the writers of ROSEANNE =)
best show ever on tv
One of my faviorite episodes of “TAGS”. Don Knotts was a true comedy genius!
R.I.P. Don Knotts…1924-2006. You are sorely missed.
