While the theme song was not Herb Alpert’s the piece played for the intro of the date to the stage WAS (“whipped Cream”). I had twisted that tune in my mind to be the intro to the Newlywed Game, which it was not. That was done for the creator of The Dating Game and the Newlywed Game (yeh Gong show too) Chuck Barris.
This version is from the 1977-1980 syndicated series and was on the first game show themed CD “Classic TV Game Show Themes.” It was updated for syndication. The ABC daytime and prime time versions of “The Dating Game” always used the original “Dating Game” theme from 1965, the year the show began.
If I’m not mistaken, I believe that IS what it is called…”The Dating Game Theme.” Often mistakenly attributed to Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass, it was actually recorded by Chet Baker & The Mariachi Brass.
I don’t think this was used on the 1973-74 syndicated version of the show, since its long run on ABC had just been cancelled at the time of its debut. I’m pretty sure this was used only on the 1978-80, from the clips I have seen. The closing theme that accompanied the goodbye kiss, though, began in the last year on ABC or so; thus, that may well have confused you about the opening.
duh

I would love to see the episode of Laverene & Shirley where Lenny & Squiggy go on the Dating Game. A VERY FUNNY episode.
