Garrett Davis’ Jessie & Lucy

By: Garrett Davis

About the Author

Accomplished playwright, Garret Davis is a North Carolina native, residing in the Triad area of the state with his wife, best friend and business partner, Carol Montague that he affectionately refers to as Monty. His son, Minister Nelson Rashad Davis is a junior at Towson State University in Towson Maryland.

He started his entertainment career in 1992 as the road manager for the New Jersey Mass Choir’s, “Hope of the World Tour”. He then entered the radio industry as station manager of a small gospel station in Raeford NC. He continued to grow and share his talent as Promotions Director at WZFX, Foxy 99 radio and later as Program Director for Kiss 107.7 FM, a major multi-format station owned by Beasley Broadcasting Corporation located in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Davis has been labeled as one of the most prolific, anointed talents in urban theater and named by NAACP as one of the “Funniest Playwrights in America” (1996) It started when he was bitten by the theater bug during a summer workshop at the Lakeland Cultural Arts Center in Littleton, North Carolina. He founded GDavisplays.com with his first theatrical production entitled, “Lord Why Me”.

For the past fifteen years he has honed his craft to becoming one of the leading playwrights with diverse talents affording him the ability to take on the role of actor, director, producer as well as playwright. His plays have consistent elements that deliver a faith inspired message of hope woven into the comedic dialogues, dramatic life circumstances and spirited musical compliments that delight audiences of all ages. His touring productions have taken him all across the United States and abroad.

Davis’ plays entertain but also have a purpose. He demonstrates his interest in the community by partnering with the Triad Chapter of the Alzheimer Association and PDY&F, Inc. an organization focused on meeting the needs of families with children located in the Winston-Salem/ Fayetteville areas. He has committed proceeds from several of his shows to benefit these two organizations.

Davis is also the founder and President of the Urban Playwrights Workshop of America, an organization established to give young aspiring playwrights the direction they need to be successful in their career. There are currently 150 members and still growing. The inaugural conference of the organization will be held this summer in Raleigh, North Carolina.

His playlist of productions are: “Lord Why Me” (1994), “God Loves a Country Boy” (1996) “Don’t Let the Green Grass Fool Ya” (1996), ” I Can Do Bad By Myself” (1998), ” A Woman’s Gotta Do, What a Woman’s Gotta Do” (2000),” Color Blind” (2001),”Do Whatcha Gotta Do” (2002) ” If Loving you is Wrong” (2003),”Private Chambers” (2004) “Marrying Up” (2005),”The Real Meaning of Christmas (2007),”Temptation” (2008), “Forget Me Not” (2008), “The Lord Will Make A Way” (2009), ” I’ll Be Home for Christmas” (2009), “Jessie & Lucy” (2010)

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Garrett Davis’ Jessie & Lucy

Like many of you I grew up watching Sanford & Son, The Jefferson, All in the Family, Lucy and of course Good Times.

What these television shows had in common was the strong bond between husband and wife with the exception of Sanford & Son but no matter what Fred and Lamont went through at the end of the show that still had each other.

If you liked any of these shows then you are going to love my latest urban theatrical production Jessie & Lucy. I wanted to step outside the box just a little bit thus the reason for me creating a 2 man show that features me and Samantha McSwain as Lucy and Darin McGill as Mr. James, the neighbor next door.

Those shows I mentioned earlier will forever be remembered as television pillars in the African American community.

With so many urban productions touring today none will reach back into yesterday and take you down memory lane like Jessie & Lucy will to remind you of the good times you had and shared during the 70;s.

It is one hilarious production that will have you rolling in the isles with laughter. Jessie & Mr. James will remind you of Fred & Grady, or Ricky & Fred or George &Tom while Jessie & Lucy will remind you of Fred & Ester, George & Wheezy, Edith & Archie or James & Florida.

Jessie & Lucy is a funny story of two people who love each other very much in their own special way some may call it a love hate relationship but they simply call it love. It’s the perfect production for your church, civic group or organization fund raiser.

Jessie & Lucy the next big thing in  theater from Garrett Davis and Gdavisplays.com

Every so often we are blessed to witness that magical chemistry from the stage that will forever be engraved in our hearts from the laughter they brought us. Who can forget the memorable magic on stage between Fred Sanford and Ester, George Jefferson and his maid Florence, the peculiar comedy of Edith and Archie Bunker, Lucy and Ricky Ricardo, and now years later comes another great couple that is sure to continue this legacy of creating a special chemistry on stage that can’t be taught.

Jessie & Lucy will take you back down memory lane to the late 60′s when times were beginning to get better for African Americans. Jessie, a shoe shine man in downtown Atlanta makes enough money to pay rent in their modest one bedroom home that his wife Lucy keeps clean.

Cleaning comes easy to Lucy since she has made her living cleaning the houses and clothes of the local doctors and lawyers in uptown Atlanta.

Jessie and Lucy have the type of relationship that both are unhappy unless they are arguing about something. The latest thing to upset both of them is the fact that Lucy wants Jessie to give her a wedding ring for their 40th wedding anniversary. The only problem is, Jessie does not want to spend more than for it coupled with the fact he’s trying to keep Lucy from figuring out where he hides his money he’s been saving for years.

One of the funniest stage plays ever by award winning playwright Garrett Davis as Jessie, a stellar performance by Tony Award Nominee Samantha McSwain will have you rolling in the isles with her backwards delivery that you just have to hear for yourself to understand.

Darin McGill, joins Davis and McSwain on stage as Mr. James, Jessie’s old friend who lives next door and can’t seem to keep anything to himself and is compelled to tell his wife everything.

Jessie & Lucy is the latest creation from playwright Garrett Davis that is a breath of fresh air from the predictable comedy of today’s’ urban theater.
