Amazing how ABC marketed a soap opera about vampires to late ’60s TV audiences. Equally amazing is how so many of the show’s most rabid followers (no pun intended) were children. With all the remakes and movie versions of classic TV shows over the past 20 years, I don’t understand why this one hasn’t been a part of that. I think they did a movie and a made-for-TV thing but that was about it. I even remember seeing a thing about Jonathan Frid in Tiger Beat back then!
i can remember this being on SCI FI Channel when i was a teenager, too bad i wasn’t into then though. Barnabas was wearing a green robe or something and it was too boring for me as a kid. Now i”ve seen every single episode of it and think its the best show ever made. If anyone hasn’t seen it you should give it a try. You won’t regret it.
I remember rushing home every afternoon after school to watch this!!!! In my hometown in North Carolina, it use to air @ 4:30 pm and our school bus would arrive at our stop at that time! WOW!!! I use to run home to try not to miss the first 5 mins.!!!! What a POWERFUL show!!!! Love it til this day!!!!
One of the best TV openers ever! The combination of the dark, crashing waves, the howling wind and the dark silhouette of the house (with those three windows) with Cobert’s utterly perfect music… just completely sums the whole series up in 30 seconds. I think I like this B&W original better than the revamped colour one, though.
I was in the 3rd grade when this show was on.. My mom let me go home from school with a friend every day for an hour or so, but she sure wouldn’t have had she known I was watching this EVERY afternoon.. LOLOL
Same here but it aired at 3:30 on the west coast. Such a great show, I didn’t know Tim Burton was planning a movie version. Hope he can do it justice.
@Thebigbadwoof Same here lol
I loved this show as a kid. Of course I watched the reruns being born in the 80s, but it was an awesome show.
I can’t fucking wait 4 the tim burton version!!!!!!!!!!
@MrJamie1932 LMAO I’m from Cherry Point, NC and did the very same thing lol

I grew up in a small town in Maine and believed the show, since it took place there, was actually filmed there too. I never missed an episode.
Cool. I too am from NC and used to do the exact same thing. It was always kinda spooky cuz mom and dad had not gotten home.

I love this series, it’s probably the only soap opera I have ever loved. I really miss watching Dark Shadows. This opening is a classic! : )

The D and S is the Olde English font.
Where’s the updated version? In later years, the title floated & curved around the screen for a few seconds before settling in the center.
THE BEST!!!!!
